The Oreck XL Gold is an upright vacuum, which is on the higher-end of the series. At just under $500, this is definitely a very pricey model. In this review of the Oreck XL Gold, I’ll go over the positive and negative aspects of owning this unit. While the price of this model is definitely higher than your average upright, this manufacturer is known to make very high quality items. First off, here’s a rundown of the features you’ll get on this unit: microban protection, 6 year warranty, a two-speed power switch, twin LED headlights, 30 ft power cord, an ergonomic handle, 6 free annual tune-ups, and it only weighs 9 lbs. Another cool thing about this vacuum is that it comes with a separate, deluxe hand-held unit.
Alright, now we’ll go over the negative aspects of the Oreck XL Gold vacuum. First off, I don’t like the fact that you don’t get any additional tools with this unit. This is true for all the models in this line – however, I know this is why they included the hand-held unit. Then there’s the fact that you have to buy expensive bags on a fairly regular basis. While it does come with a few spare bags, they run out pretty quick. Last thing I would consider a negative is the higher price tag. On the other hand, you often get what you pay for – and the Oreck XL Gold vacuum cleaner is no exception. I really love the after-purchase service that is included with the price. You get free yearly tune-ups, and a very long warranty. Overall, I’m giving this model a 4.3 / 5 star rating.
The Oreck XL Element vacuum is the most basic version in the popular line. The good thing about being the most basic model, is that it’s also the cheapest – right around $300. In this review of the Oreck XL Element vacuum cleaner, I’ll go over this model’s strengths and weaknesses, then decide if it’s worth the higher price tag. One thing that I really like about this model is that it actually comes with a small hand-held unit as well. Here’s a quick rundown of the features you’ll find on this unit: single speed motor, 25 ft power cord, a headlight, 13 inch cleaning path, HEPA quality filter bag, microban protection, a 3 year warranty, ergonomic handle, and you can get 1 free tune-up. Another thing I like about this vacuum is that it only weighs 9 lbs. Since it’s so lightweight, it’s really no problem to carry it up and down stairs.
OK, onto the negative aspects of the Oreck XL Element vacuum cleaner. Probably the biggest complaint people have with this line of products is that it doesn’t come with many attachments. I know this is why they include the hand-held model, but it really doesn’t have the suction power of the full upright. Also, the 13 inch cleaning path is a little narrow for my liking. It’s alright, but can take a little longer to clean up bigger rooms. Another thing I don’t like is the fact that you have to buy expensive replacement bags. This is one of the main attraction to bag-less systems. Lastly, I think this model is a little pricey for what you get. I know it does a spectacular job at basic cleaning, but it’s still a lot of money to put out for the Oreck XL Element vacuum cleaner. Overall, I’m giving this model a 4.2 / 5 star rating.
The Oreck Edge vacuum is a brand new upright model, which is said to be the most powerful and quietest currently made by this manufacturer. In this review of the Oreck Edge vacuum cleaner, I’ll go over this model’s strengths and weaknesses, then decide if it’s worth the nearly $800 price tag. I have to admit, this is probably the most stylish model that this manufacturer makes. OK, here’s a rundown of the best features you’ll find on this unit: a 30 ft power cord, variable speed controls, quick wand tool, a gliding head, HEPA quality filter, a long-lasting belt, it only weighs 13 lbs, and it’s also said to be the quietest and most powerful upright vacuum made by Oreck. Besides those features, you also get a separate hand-held unit included with the purchase. This little unit alone is worth a fair amount of money, and it also comes with a few tools.
Alright, now we’ll move onto the negative aspects of the Oreck Edge vacuum cleaner. To be honest, there is not a lot I don’t like about this model. There are only three things that come to mind: the $800 price, the head is a little too bulky, and the fact that you have to purchase bags. I think the price is going to be way over most people’s budget, and I think it’s just a little too high for what you get. The head is fine in most instances, but it may not fit under low beds or furniture too well. And the fact that you have to buy bags just adds to the cost of owning the Oreck Edge vacuum. Overall, I just can’t help from liking this model though. It’s so beautiful and does an excellent job that I’m still giving it a 4.5 / 5 star rating.
The Oreck Signature II vacuum is a an upright model, which is actually just a redesign of the original. The exterior is actually quite attractive, so good job on that. In this review of the Oreck Signature II vacuum cleaner, I’ll go over the strengths and weaknesses of this model, then decide if it’s worth the $230 asking price. Here’s a rundown of the features you’ll get on this unit: fingertip controls of the brush roll, a 30 ft power cord, height adjustments, dual-edge cleaning, pet hair pick up, a headlight, an 8 quart capacity bag, and a 10 inch cleaning path. I also like the fact that this vacuum comes with a few extra replacement bags. Like most models from this manufacturer this model is super light – just 9 lbs.
OK, onto the negative aspects of the Oreck Signature II vacuum cleaner. I think the 10 inch cleaning path is pretty narrow, especially for larger rooms. As with most models from this manufacturer, this unit does not come with a lot of extra features. For instance, this model does not come with an extension wand (although, the Plus version does). And while I’m glad it comes with some replacement bags, it will eventually cost a good amount of money to buy the bags. Lastly, while I can appreciate a good solid vacuum, I think the Oreck Signature II is just a little bit overpriced. Don’t get me wrong though, I think this model is great. It’s just missing a couple things I would have liked and the price is a little high. Overall, I’m giving it a 4 / 5 star rating.
The Oreck XL Signature vacuum is a super lightweight model with a lot of power. In this review of the Oreck XL Signature, I’ll go over this model’s best features, as well as it’s worst aspects. It’s hard enough to find a moderately powerful vacuum cleaner under 10 lbs, let alone a powerful suction model under 10 lbs (this one is 9). A few other nice features you’ll find on this model include: a 30 ft power cord, easy dirt disposal, a 12 inch cleaning path, and a HEPA filter. This model also uses about 1/3 the amount of electricity of other major brands.
Now I’ll go over the negative aspects of the Oreck XL Signature vacuum, if any. There isn’t a lot to complain about with this model, just a couple smaller issues. First off, it doesn’t do that great on longer carpets. I’ve also read a few comments that complain about the customer service of this manufacturer. I think this is more of a fluke though, not a trend. The design could probably use a little help – it doesn’t quite have the look of a Dyson. Other than that, the only other complaint I’ve heard about with the Oreck XL Signature vacuum is the slightly higher price tag, which is $200. Overall, I’m giving this model a 4.3 / 5 star rating.
If you’ve got an Oreck vacuum, chances are you’ll eventually need some parts – preferably some discount Oreck parts. Well, you know if you go to their main website, you won’t find a lot of great deals – however they do have decent guarantees on a lot of products, which is worth something.
For the absolute lowest discount Oreck parts prices, you’ll want to check eBay, Craigslist and Amazon. The first 2 are kind of hit-or-miss, and you have to be careful to find reputable sellers. Another few good websites that sell cheap Oreck parts are: TotalVac.com, GoVacuum.com, and USAVacuum.com.
Another tactic some people choose to use, are to buy generic branded substitutes. This is OK most of the time, but if a problem arises with the part, you’re most likely on your own (no replacements or warranties). I would suggest sticking to Oreck branded parts – just use one of the tactics above to find that great discount price.
Dyson vs Oreck, which is the better vacuum? In this case we’ll take a look at the Dyson DC14 and the Oreck XL, two of the respective companies’ best selling vacuum cleaners. Both are excellent machines and are priced fairly similarly.
Lets look at the Dyson DC14 first: it weighs 18.5 lbs, has a 35.4 ft cord, it’s bagless, 2 quart dirt canister and has a 5 year warranty. Next lets look at the Oreck XL: it weighs 8 lbs, 25 ft cord, it’s a bagged vacuum, 8 quart bag and a 10 year housing warranty.
So who wins this Dyson vs Oreck competition? Out of these two models, I would have to go with the Dyson for a few reasons. The Oreck’s suction is amazing, however I think the Dyson has a slight edge because it is so close to the floor and you can raise the head up and down. Both vacuums do great on bare floors and carpet, however the Dyson has some extra tools on board which gives it the advantage again. Both machines are made of plastic, however the Dyson DC14 seems to be built a little better. Also, it just looks cooler than the Oreck XL.
Now, don’t think I’m just hammering on the Oreck. I think it does have some great qualities not available on the Dyson. I’ll just point out a few: you don’t have to change the bag as often as you have to empty the canister, it’s much lighter, it’s more energy efficient and it’s built in the USA (if that matters to you). Again, I would still choose the Dyson DC14 over the Oreck XL for the reasons mentioned above.
The best lightweight vacuum cleaners not only have to be lighter than your average vacuum, but also have outstanding suction and performance. There are a couple lightweight vacuums which should definitely be considered, but I think one really stands out as the overall best lightweight vacuum cleaner. Here are my top 3 picks:
Miele Neptune – This 11 lb canister vacuum is pricey, but it’s versatility and power easily make up for it. It’s light enough to take up and down stairs with ease. Also, the Neptune’s filtration system is one of the best on the market. I also have to mention that this machine is very quiet, compared to most competitors.
Oreck XL Series – The Oreck XL is consistently rated one of the best lightweight vacuum cleaners by users because of it’s powerful suction and light weight (only 8 lbs). The basic model comes with a 1 year warranty, while the new Oreck XL Platinum Pilot comes with a 10 year warranty, and weights 10 lbs. They are excellent machines, just a little pricey as well.
Simplicity Freedom – This lightweight vacuum cleaner is only 8 lbs. It has superb suction for such a little vacuum, and also features a HiFlow HEPA filtration system. It’s perfect for going up and down flights of stairs or just pulling around large rooms.
The best lightweight vacuum of these 3 top choices, in my opinion, is the Simplicity Freedom. It is definitely lightweight, and the suction is tremendous. It’s small enough to get into tight places as well. One thing I don’t like about Simplicity vacuums is that you have to buy from an authorized retailer, and they are not available for purchase online. I would definitely check into the other 2 lightweight vacuums if the Simplicity is not an option for you.
A hypo-allergenic vacuum cleaner is one which removes dust & allergen particles from your floors, while keeping the suctioned particles from escaping the vacuum. Bagged hypo-allergenic vacuum cleaners do especially well at keeping those particles inside, although there are a few bagless models available. Most newer units will come with a HEPA filter. This filter helps keep any particles from escaping when the air is exiting the machine.
Oreck is the main company making hypo-allergenic vacuums – and probably the best at it. However, there are other manufacturers out there as well. Miele, Dyson, Hoover and Garry are a few other companies with models on the market.
If I were to recommend a unit, it would be the Oreck XL Silver Power Team. It’s on the higher-end of the price spectrum, but does a good job and looks great. Besides having a hypo-allergenic filtration system, it also has antimicrobial protection and is pretty light-weight.
An Oreck Halo UV-C Light vacuum review states: “The Oreck Halo UV-C light vacuum cleaner is a good mix of new technology and some good old-fashioned Oreck design. As you may know, it’s supposed to kill like 99% of dust mite eggs, bacteria and common germs. Of course, I can’t verify this claim, but I know it must do something because my allergies don’t seem as bad after using it a few times. I think it works especially good on carpets, with pretty decent suction.
Also, I personally think the Oreck Halo vacuum looks better than most of the other machines they sell at Oreck. It’s a little heavier at 17 lbs, but that’s still not bad compared to other competitor brands. I think this is the perfect vacuum for families with small kids (who worry about their kids playing on dirty floors) and also those of us with allergies, as dust mites are the cause of a lot of that. I think the best part is the 3 year warranty. “
A user’s Oreck XL2000 bagged upright vacuum cleaner review says: “The Oreck XL2000 bagged upright vacuum cleaner has worked wonderfully for the past few years I’ve owned it. It’s pretty light, so you can haul it up and down stairs pretty easily. Oreck makes very sturdy vacuum cleaners, and this is no exception. The suction is great as well.
One thing to consider is how pricey the vacuum bags can be. It’s not that bad if you don’t vacuum a lot, but it can really add up if you do. Also, the Oreck XL2000 bagged upright vacuum cleaner doesn’t come with any attachments, it would be nice to have a few. All in all, this vacuum does a great job and I would buy another when this one dies.”
A user reviews the Oreck XL2200 Bagged Upright Vacuum Cleaner: “The Oreck XL2200 Bagged Upright Vacuum Cleaner is a very sturdy vacuum cleaner. The handle is made out of aluminum, and the head is made from hard plastic, with a rubber bumper all the way around it. The beater brush has 2 height adjustments, high and low. When you first get the vacuum, the brush is set on high. As the brush head wears down, you can set it lower, to get more life out of your brush head. This is a very light vacuum. It’s easy to use on stairs, and it’s no problem carrying it around the house. Finally, I think this does an excellent job of cleaning my floors. I have a cat, a dog, and a parrot, all of whom make a considerable mess in my house. My Oreck XL2200 Bagged Upright Vacuum Cleaner has no problems with fur, feathers, cat litter, and seed thrown on the floor by my parrot. The Oreck stores located across the country provide excellent local support for their products, and sell brushes, belts, bags, and deodorizers at fair prices.
On the down side, there are no on-board attachments for this model, making it difficult to do edge work and upholstery. The Oreck XL2200 Bagged Upright Vacuum Cleaner one of the louder vacuums I’ve ever used. It’s impossible for somebody else to watch TV or read while you’re vacuuming. This is a minor problem, but it’s there. The cord wrap on the vacuum is rigid. By this, I mean that the top part of the cord wrap doesn’t fold down so you can take the whole cord off. You have to unwind the cord the same way you would have to wind it back up. Again, it’s not a huge issue, but it’s kind of a pain.
All in all, I’ve been very happy with my Oreck XL2200 Bagged Upright vacuum. After four years of use, I’m still on my original beater head, and only my second belt. If I ever have to replace my vacuum, I’d buy another Oreck in a minute.”
A user reviews the Oreck XL21 Bagged Upright Vacuum Cleaner: “The Oreck XL21 Bagged Upright Vacuum Cleaner did an amazing job of cleaning the carpet of the bird dander, it was light enough to use on the stairs, cleaned the wall edges nicely and no dust particles were floating in the air.
The more I used the vacuum, the cleaner the house seemed to stay and with a bird like we had, that was an amazing feat in itself. I vacuumed the mattresses, the couches and on the hard surface floors, the lower power setting did a great job of not scattering the debris but even tackled chunks of bird food, cheerios, an occasional penny and other kid left sundry items without a problem. Once in a while I drop the Oreck XL21 Bagged Upright Vacuum Cleaner off for a tune up and am greeted with a smile and I have never regretted buying this vacuum. We are on our 3rd year now and it works as well today as it did the first day.”
